Welcome

I hope this blog will be a direct insight to my travels. Learning curves, hopefully, not mountains. People, emotions and cultures. The really important elements of life.

My last Good Morning from Sri Lanka

Yesterday was hard. I worked at the orphanage in the morning then returned later to see them one last time. I took a couple of pots of bubbles which caused squeels of excitment from the children as more and more of them saw the bubbles.
I managed to sneak a magnetic snakes and ladders to the hands of one of the older girls hoping that she will be able to hide it, I thought the magnetic one would be better as it has a hard plastic box/case.
Of course the very worse part was saying goodbye to Arajuna who we took back to his Mum during the afternoon. He had spent the weekend with us as he is not allowed to be at the orphanage or school. He apparently is allowed back next Monday, I do hope that all goes well. I gave him some money as we were travelling to his house, I took his hand and placed a note in it, he immediately exclaimed loudly 'No' in his good English , I just said yes and squeezed his hand tight and indicated to sssh. He was so grateful it brought tears to my eyes.
Last night we met up with David who is a volunteer English teacher at the orphanage, he was telling us that he had heard the boy who had been discovered holding hands with a teenage girl, had yesterday been physically punished, he is now to be sent 'home', the problem is he has no 'home' he is a complete orphan therefore he will be sent to an alternative orphanage. That apparently is considered a poor alternative by the kids as some of them have come from other places and they say the others are even worse than this one regarding the amount of labour expected from them and the amount of abuse issued to them.

Anyway here I am now my last blog post before flying to Vietnam for part two of my adventure. Today we are going to the British School to talk to them about placing volunteers in the orphanage to cover subjects like councelling etc. Then to the market to get a couple of t-shirts (I hope) before my last first aid training at 14.30. This time it is the Guides I am teaching. I then pack and leave for dinner then Colombo airport.

Vietnam here I come!
